2012 is going to be an exciting time for social media and content marketing, as it’s all become as mainstream as they come. The most common reasons for it’s use is to generate exposure, reach a new audience and to increase traffic to your website.

Over the holidays, have a think about where you are right now, where you would like to be in 2012 and where you need to be in your strategies.

Many businesses, up to this point have gotten distracted by the challenges they face when it comes to social and content marketing. The top culprits being:

– Lack of resources and time to devote to social media

– Inability to measure it’s success

– Lack of adequate tracking & monitoring

– Identifying which sites are most relevant

– Identifying the individuals or communities to connect with

– Co-ordination of social media activities

The good news is that social media has grown up. Its skills are developing rapidly. The information you need is out there and is light-years better than it was even a year ago. With these challenges you need to re-evaluate why you are using social media and decide how to make the most of content marketing.

The golden rule is to always create interesting or original content. Search around. See what people are talking about, interested in etc. It’s only when you listen that you can effectively engage by creating relevant and compelling content. After all, content is king right!
