facebook company page, profile, group or place?!

I have a facebook profile. The majority of my friends have facebook profiles. We arrange to meet in a local bar that has a facebook page. When we get there we check-in using facebook places. The bar has authorised their facebook page and connected it to their facebook place, so we are prompted to ‘like’ their page also. We decide that we want to return each week so we create a facebook group in order to round up some more friends. We use this group as a way of having communal facebook chats. We also tell our friends to join the bar’s facebook page. We then all get targeted relevant content and news updates directly to our newsfeed.

Lost???

Although this sounds incredibly convoluted, it could not be more straightforward…

There’s a reason that facebook established all of these different platforms within the one site and as a business it pays to know why. It’s mainly to do with content and what you want to achieve either as a business or an individual, which can have a massive impact on the success of your company’s online marketing.

King Content sees so many businesses make the mistake of creating a facebook profile for their brand – facebook faux pas 101. Because of this, we decided to outline the difference between facebook’s ‘content platforms’ in order to make sense of how content works across each.

Facbook profile

Facebook profiles are for individual people – not companies.

* Setting up your business as a ‘profile’ account is actually against facebook’s terms and conditions so can be cancelled at any time even if it were to be a success. If you have done this and don’t want to lose the following you amassed, you can migrate to a business page here.

* Profile pages will only allow you to have up to 5000 friends, so if you’re a business, you have a limited potential.

* Profile pages LIMIT interaction and therefore content until a friendship is established. A person interested in your business can’t write on your wall until you are friends. It is the equivalent of locking the front door of your business until someone knocks to come in.

Facebook page

* Designed for businesses – and therefore has an unlimited amount of ‘likes’

* Business applications can be integrated onto pages and used specifically for business use – welcome pages, opinion polls, competitions etc.

* The use of content is far more dynamic. Pages are designed to promote businesses and therefore are the pinnacle of content channels.

* You can link to twitter as your business.

* You can link to other businesses across facebook.

* You can use facebook as a page and leave comments as the business.

* You get automatic access to facebook Insights, the automated analytics tool.

* You can message particular demographics within your group.

Facebook places

* Accessed through smartphones only – facebook places is a GPS enabled feature which allows people to login to your business when they are within the vicinity.

* You will see that when you have been set up as a facebook place (note: anyone can do this) there will be a verification option at the bottom.

* To verify yourself as the owner of the place you will need a pass certain criteria.

* Once you do however, you can link to your page meaning that every time someone checks-in to your venue they can also like your business instantly.

Facebook group

* Here’s where a few people get mixed up. A facebook group is incredibly different to a facebook page. Why? Because it is designed for people who may already know each other to share information.

* If a university had a facebook page, then the alumni students of Maths 2004 would have a group.

* The content shared here is likely to be more personal to a select ‘group’ of people and therefore not designed for wider consumption.

* There are not as many application features associated with Facebook groups. It is merely a way of chatting to a group of people, quickly.

Facebook group chat

* Members of groups can have live group chats. This makes this platform a lot more personal for those who join.

* It is therefore not recommended that a business start a group as members would only drop out when they soon have random people making conversation with them!
